Inside Steven Alan

Window Shopping with Secret Forts

  • James writes a blog called Secret Forts; a collection of good things that interest him. James was nice enough to sound off on some of his Steven Alan spring picks.

Frankly, I am a sucker for waxed cotton. Complete and total sucker. And this rain slicker is a perfect example of a nearly year round staple. I knew when I first saw it that we were going to be long time friends and it hasn’t let me down yet.
For s/s ‘o9, SA gives us this soon-to-be-total-classic in the new color, storm. It makes me wish I lived in Seattle, just so I could wear it that much. Roll up a pair of slim chinos, put on your trusty old pair of Maine hunting shoes, and this… you’re golden.

While we’re on the subject of outerwear, Steven Alan re-invents a modern gent’s overcoat with the short mac. And its all in the details with a madras lining, covered placket, perfect length and typically well-tailored cut. I can see wearing this on a crisp spring morning, over a favorite sweater.

Beginning in late Spring and all summer…I live in madras button downs. Literally. I have a dozen or so in my closet that I keep on constant rotation for those few months out of the year. Take Steven Alan’s signature reverse seam shirt and a light, crisp, yellow and red madras and I have the makings of a summer fling on my hands. I may not take it off. My other shirts may get insanely jealous. Sorry shirts, it’s me not you.

You need things to carry things in. You could use a number of things, but when there’s the Port tote out there, why use anything else. I am a huge proponent of totes. I’m posting ‘em all over Secret Forts. And for any man that questions carrying one, let this put an end to the debate. What’s not to love about this one? Sturdy canvas. zippered, vinyl closure…I’m ready to throw Kem Nunn’s “Tijuana Straits”, a towel, some sun block and flip flops into it and head to Mecox Beach with my wife for the day.

I suppose while my Birdwell’s are drying at the end of the day, I need another pair of shorts to put on. I’m liking the new Paul shorts. Those with a v-neck tee, and my numero uno go-to, authentic lace up white Vans, and I’m set. You can wear them when you’re not at the beach. Take a bicycle ride over the bridge and all the way to Steven Alan on Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn. Me, I live in Brooklyn, so I get to skip the bridge part.

While you’re there, be sure to check out all the s/s ‘o9 offerings. There are quite a few I haven’t mentioned. Also check out the selection of Simon Miller denim.

    best regards,
    James of Secret Forts
