Inside Steven Alan

A Conversation with Clare Vivier

  • We’ve been big fans of Clare Vivier for a long time. In addition to  selling her bags in our shops, we also represent her in our showroom. Her iconic shapes have become a new classic. Clare has also become a great friend to the Steven Alan family. She recently offered us a glimpse into her new studio in LA and chatted with us about her upcoming plans for the season.

    Congrats on the new space! How are you settling in?

    Thank you! We are settling in great. It is an amazing space – on a sunny corner in Silverlake with tons of natural light. Right now we’re using it as a studio while we flesh out the plans for the store. When we start the build, we’ll move our design studio to a warehouse.

    We’re excited to carry a few new styles this Spring, including the Petit Messenger, Moyen Messenger and zip wallet. What inspired them?

    The Petit and Moyen messengers were designed out of necessity. Our messenger bag has been one of our bestsellers for some time now and we had feedback that women wanted the same style, but as a shoulder bag. So we brought the size down a little and replaced the cross body with a shoulder strap and voila: the Moyen was born. The Petit is a great alternative to our clutch for night and is also the perfect bag for weekends when you only need the essentials. I designed the zip wallet to fill a void in my life – I needed a new wallet but nothing in the maketplace was quite right – so we designed our own: classic with a twist.

    Is there a particular bag that has been your go-to lately?

    I’m carrying a Fall prototype – it’s gorgeous, and I can’t wait for it to hit stores. But inside that bag is my ever present black pebble flat clutch in which I keep my essentials so I can grab and go.

    You have a well-documented affinity for shoes. Any chance we’ll see a Clare Vivier shoe collection in the future?

    Yes, I would love to do a shoe collection! We are already plotting the look and feel of our dream shoes.

    {Working on a pattern}

    You recently spent some time in Venice and Paris and shared some lovely photographs of your trip. What’s the next destination on your travel wish list?

    My next dream travel is to Tokyo. I’ve never been there. I’d love to do a trunk show at one of the stores that carry my line and I’d love to freak out on the stores and street fashion.

    Thanks to Clare for sharing these photos. You can shop the new arrivals in stores and online.

    Unfortunately we won’t have the Moyen online for spring, but you can call the SF store at 415.558.8944 and order or place it on hold.

    Hi Clare!

    I just purchased one of your gray clutch purses from Holt Renfrew in Toronto to give as a perfect birthday gift to a friend. I’ll be back for more! Out of curiosity, I was wondering where your bags are manufactured, and about the history of your company’s origin. I wanted to share this information with my friend. The leather you use seems very fine! When you have the time, I would appreciate a brief history lesson! Thank you!
    Sincerely, Lauren Sullivan
