I bought my Levi’s at a secondhand store. They are gray with a button fly. They used to be too small. A year ago I bought them two sizes too small so I’d have a reason to get in shape. My Levi’s have been subjected to Everything from spilled soda to being covered in mud

Freshman year, in need of some new (old) 501′s, I went to my usual the hole in the wall, literally, in Berkeley. Not so much a store as a mound of denim in a 10 x 10 space. Like a treasuer hunt, I’d tell the grumpy/charming owner my size and what i was looking for, and she’d pull out the perfect well worn pair out of the pile. For a year I wore them as is with old vans or cowboy boots…the next year rolled up with combat boots or flats….after that I pegged them (precurser to skinny jeans) and wore them with heels or sandals. As I changed, so did my second skin. After high school no amount of patching could hold the knees together, so they morphed into…cutoffs. Perfect. Years- many years later, I still wear them.

My favorite levi’s jeans were my step-father’s from the early 80′s. I’ve had them since around 1994 and have since converted them to cut-offs. They are my go to summer shorts for beach days and running errands around the city.
