Q&A: Objects Without Meaning
August 20th, 2014 | Events, New Arrivals
We’re looking forward to hosting a trunk show with Objects Without Meaning this weekend at our La Brea shop. If you’re in LA, stop by 123 S. La Brea from 2-5 PM on Saturday to meet designer Alexandra Michelle, shop the Fall ’14 collection, end enter an OWM denim raffle. We chatted with the Australian-born, LA-based designer about the collection and campaign, which stars Miranda July.
You’re originally from Australia but now reside in LA. What do you miss most about Australia, and what do you enjoy about living in LA?
L.A. reminds me of Australia actually, so missing Australia hasn’t really come up. I love how easy and relaxed L.A. is.
We admire your mission to create easy, unobtrusive clothing in minimal silhouettes, with the intention of allowing the wearer’s own personality to come through. Can you tell us a bit about how you arrived at your no-concept concept?
“Less is more” is my belief, so as a designer I keep things simple and functional. I would rather spend more on fabrics and focus on comfort.
We hear that Mike Mills designed a couple of the prints featured in your Fall ’14 collection. You’ve worked with him on art and film projects before, but what was it like to work with him on a design?
Yes, Mike Mills made some prints for my AW14 collection. He was very involved in the process until completion, which really creates a true sense of collaboration. I was so fortunate to be able to work with him again — he is a true visionary.
The campaign images and video starring Miranda July are beautiful. How did this collaboration come about?
Her husband is Mike Mills, who introduced us and she really loved how the prints turned out. The next thing I knew we were planning a low key, very organic shoot. It fit the brand’s aesthetic perfectly.
What are some of your personal favorites from the collection?
Denim is my uniform, so I would say our boy zip jean, and of course the linen tees. I’m very hands on at the studio, so comfort is ideal in my everyday dressing. Our jumpsuits and blazers are also key pieces. They can be incorporated into your existing wardrobe or worn as a statement piece for the season.

What are some of your favorite spots in LA at the moment?
I love the vibe downtown during the week. Neighborhoods like the Arts District and Little Tokyo are my usual spots! One of the great aspects of living in California is the access to nature, so I try to get out to Griffith Park for hikes or drive out of town when I can.
Many thanks to Alexandra!
